Impressions in Sand
Susan Popko is a contemporary innovator, using sand and stone to create this unique approach to what she
calls a "sculptured sand painting". This bas-relief art is new to most viewers who are perhaps more familiar with Navajo sand painting.
But the concept of "Earth Art" is over 20,000 years old. It dates back to when prehistoric people
painted and carved on cave walls and stone boulders. In the year 3500 B.C., pictographic symbols were impressed in clay and engraved in stone in the Mesopotamia area. In 445 A.D. the Maya of
Mesoamerica intricately carved limestone stelae and monumental temple facades.
Popko's inspiration derives from these archaeological discoveries. Throughout Arizona she has researched and
recorded 1,000 year old petroglyphs inscribed on stone by the Hohokam and Anasazi peoples. Susan Popko has interpreted the beauty of sculptured form, with the interplay of sand and semi-precious
stones into Fine Earth Art. |
